SCREAMING EAGLE LANDS IN COMIC BOOK STORES

Soaring through the skies of the old American West, a giant screaming eagle is the hero of a new graphic novel from Discovery Comics. Screaming Eagle, an epic illustrated novel, is now released for national distribution.

Screaming Eagle portrays the lifelong journey of a Native American warrior whose destiny is linked with the guiding spirit of an eagle.

"I wanted to show the great changes in America during the westward expansion," said author Scott Deschaine. "I tried to show the conflicts between settlers and Native Americans through events in the life of one man."

Comic book industry giant and Native American history buff Mike Roy illustrated the sweeping epic, his last work before his death in 1996. Roy, who helped found a museum for Native American and Eskimo art, and drew the acclaimed Native American lore Sunday strip "Akwas," produced "Screaming Eagle" with Scott.

Many full and double page spreads give Roy's artwork plenty of room to impress. In his long career as an illustrator, Mike Roy has worked with Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel, Submariner creator Bill Everett and "Mad" magazine's Jack Davis.

"Mike's drawings capture the vast beauty of a land never tamed by settlers," said Deschaine. "His attention to detail is wonderfully accurate. This project was obviously a labor of love for him, and, as his last piece, became very important historically. Mike had an incredible knowledge of Native American lore. You can see it in the costumes, decorations and symbols in Screaming Eagle."

The 292-page hardcover book uses well-rounded and believable characters to tell a tale that is timeless yet uniquely American. "The story shows a balanced view of this period in history," says Deschaine. "There are good guys and villains on either side of the conflict. Through it all, the main character, Screaming Eagle, grows and develops as he is caught up in adventures greater than himself." Supernatural elements in the story reflect Native American reverence for the mystery of nature.

Deschaine and Roy worked together on many commercial comic books before Screaming Eagle. "We would cram a textbook's worth of information into 12 pages," chuckles Deschaine. With Screaming Eagle, Deschaine challenged Roy to illustrate an expansive and dynamic story unlike anything before attempted in comics.

Complementing Roy's masterful pen and ink drawing is grey tone artist Kimi Weart. Her expressive use of computer technology adds a classic ink wash look to Screaming Eagle's dramatic story.

"Screaming Eagle," the 291-page hardcover graphic novel, lists for $19.95.
