Comic book industry legend Mike Roy's final project, Discovery Comic's "Screaming Eagle," was released for national distribution in 1999. The hardcover, 291-page graphic novel was the famous illustrator's last work before his death in 1996.
Roy, who helped found a museum for Native American and Eskimo art, and illustrated the acclaimed Native American lore Sunday strip "Akwas," produced "Screaming Eagle" with writer Scott Deschaine. The sweeping epic chronicles the lifelong journey of a Native American warrior with the guiding spirit of an eagle.
"I've always been impressed by Mike's list of credits," said Deschaine, who also produced educational comics with Roy. "Mike was right in the middle of the development of today's comic book industry."
Roy worked for the United States Information Agency (U.S.I.A.) under famed news reporter Edward R. Murrow, producing comics to promote the American way of life to people around the world. Works included a comic book about the U.N. and a daily strip that was translated into hundreds of languages.
"When Mike produced the comic strip 'The Saint' (based on the popular character by Leslie Charteris) he hired Jack Davis as assistant, giving Davis his first job in New York," said Deschaine. Davis went on to fame in the EC horror comics and in "Mad" comic magazine, and is a sought after magazine illustrator to this day.
Roy's lifetime of experience was allowed to blossom in "Screaming Eagle." Beautiful vistas are given many full and double page spreads. "We let Mike's artwork take over the book," said Deschaine. "I'd unwrap these drawings he sent me and just stand there awed. Mike knew his subject matter and he was a master graphic storyteller."
Complementing Roy's masterful pen and ink drawing is grey tone artist Kimi Weart, a newcomer who uses the best of her computer's capabilities without losing that classic ink wash look.
