THE EYES OF THE NEREID - Based on the Odyssey story. The eyes that Phoenicians used to paint on their boats were to remind Neptune of the eyes of his daughters, the Nereid. Here they are, in their lush eye makeup, calling the poor sailors to their doom in spite of the obvious homage painted on their ship.

FAUNA AND PAN - Based on a poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning called "Pan is Dead." An early Christian myth (as opposed to Christian fact) is that when Christ was crucified that a cry went up from the forests of Greece and Crete that announced that the god Pan had died. James thinks this print contains more Christian imagery than any single piece he's drawn before or since.

THE ARCHANGEL MICHAEL VERSUS SATAN IN THE FORM OF A DRAGON - A piece based on a story from the Apocrypha (although it is referenced in Jude's epistle). James said this has the honor of being his work with the longest title.
