These pieces were featured in the April 27, 2007 (Vol. 56, No. 17) issue of READ magazine (published by Weekly Reader) to illustrate "The Sea Cook" by Wim Coleman, based on the novel "Treasure Island" by Robert Louis Stevenson. The art director for this project was Tanja Pohl and creative director was Amy Gery. "I actually got four full sized spots, and two details (one on the masthead page, one in the story proper) in this issue of READ, with my byline on each," said James. "I also got a lot of creative license from Tanja. She only told me that she had four formats for the pieces, two "heavy" verticles at 4.5" x 9.5", one "splash" at 7" x 9.5", and one "spot" at 4" x 5.5". She let me pick the scenes to illustrate, approving my choices right away. I did five thumbnails for the whole job, one for each scene, plus one alternate angle of Long John Silver leading Jim up Spyglass Hill. Tanja and I agreed that the alternate angle was the better of the two and so that's what I penciled. I completed the job in a little under a month (that's including all consultation, approvals and sending the art)." All images are copyright ©2007 Weekly Reader Corporation.
